Color Combinations: How to Choose Paint Colors For Interior

Choosing colors that fit your interior is not always easy. Trends change, tastes differ and different colors suit every home. Experimenting with paint and color until you find a successful combination is certainly possible, but you will quickly lose a lot of money and time. You can read here how you can put together successful color combinations that suit your interior.

To be able to change a room dramatically so that it has harmony, comfort, and the desired atmosphere, color combinations must be a concern.

Color in Interior Design

Color has no small impact on human psychology. In interior design, choosing colors must be done carefully. We cannot just use any color based on our wishes and preferences for one type of color, let alone try to combine them.

However, to be able to change a room dramatically so that it has harmony, comfort, and the desired atmosphere, color combinations – coloring – can be used as a reference.

Color is indeed a kind of “magical” element. It has the power and ability to change and make something that previously looked ordinary, appear special.

But, once again, this cannot be done just like that. Many factors must be considered when determining the best color combination for each room. One factor that must be taken into consideration is the lighting and direction of the room.

Interior design itself has the aim of changing a room so that it can truly provide comfort for its occupants. Interior design is about changing and making a room truly liveable. On that basis, knowledge about interior design “exists”.

The question then is: what color combination, or more precisely, what kind of house paint color combination can display the best atmosphere and perhaps even suit the character and personality of each occupant?

Combining Colors With The Color Wheel

The color wheel is used to determine which colors go together. Here you will find all the colors that we can observe with a color prism. The further apart the colors are on the circle, the more they will contrast with each other.

color wheel

Using the color wheel you can easily find out which interior colors match each other. You can do this in three different ways: combining contrasting colors, Ton-Sur-Ton color combinations, and harmonious paint combinations:

#01. Contrast Coloring Scheme

The colors opposite each other on the color wheel are complementary. By using these contrasting color combinations, both colors are enhanced by each other. This creates a lively interior that radiates strength. The most common combinations are green-pink, yellow-blue, blue-red, and purple-orange. In the photo below, a contrasting black and white interior was chosen.

Contrast is a combination of traditional coloring on the walls with a predominance of calm, soft, and light colors.

The contrast coloring scheme is intended to make the main color used on the walls feel more dominant compared to the color used in other areas of the room, such as coloring the wood, ceiling, windows, or others.

Contrasting coloring creates a fresh and bright look.

#02. Complementary Color Combinations

Complementary is a paint color combination of one or more colors.

The main color on the walls combines with other color choices used for the roof or ceiling, furniture, and/or windows.

Complementary is the opposite of contrast. This usually combines soft colors on the walls, combined with the use of bold and darker colors on the wooden parts ( furniture, doors, windows, etc.).

#03. Coordinated Color Scheme – Combine Harmonious Colors

By combining adjacent colors on the color wheel you get harmonious color combinations. Commonly used combinations are orange-red, blue-turquoise, and green-yellow. To make the harmonious colors stand out, it is best to combine them with neutral shades such as white, gray, or black. In the photo below, a combination of earth tones was chosen: white, beige, brown, and gray.

This is the use of different colors for each part of the room to create harmony.

The colors on the walls, wood, ceiling or roof, furniture, or even some decorations use different colors that are maintained in harmony.

Light and calm colors are used on the roof and ceiling, as well as on the fireplace and the wooden elements.

#04. Tone On Tone Shades – Tone On Tone Color Combinations

Tone-on-tone shades are colors with the same color tone and a different amount of white. This color combination is ideal for adding subtle nuances to your interior. You can find tone-on-tone shades in the store by using the color samples. This always shows one basic color with different degrees of white. You can also apply the tone-on-tone principle in a white interior.

By painting the ceiling and walls in different shades of white, the room will feel a lot more pleasant. In the photo below, a combination of beige tones (carpet, coffee table, lamp) and gray tones (floor, walls, sofa) was chosen.
